Bringing order to chaos
My painting process works with natural processes: water, pigments and their physics. I impose no form; I disappear, accompanying and intervening in a patient play of chaos and control, control and chaos, until the work is fulfilled. The same holds for teaching: to accompany to the end without the teacher ever being glimpsed.

Shitao: “Who cleaves the chaos, if not the Single Stroke?”
Huayulu 畫語錄, ch. 7 “絪縕” (Yīnyūn): 「筆與墨會,是為絪縕。絪縕不分,是為混沌。闢混沌者,舍一畫而誰耶?」 — “When brush and ink meet, they form the primordial breath (yīnyūn); while that breath stays undivided, it is chaos (hùndùn); and who cleaves the chaos, if not the Single Stroke (yīhuà)?”. Version checked against the translations of Ryckmans (fr.) and Strassberg (Enlightening Remarks on Painting, 1989). The phrase “the brush serves to save things from chaos” in Mi Siglo is a loose paraphrase.
