Toponymic cartography

2018-Ongoing

Marco Noris’s toponymic cartographies translate walking into pictorial space. In them, the toponym ceases to function as a mere geographical reference and appears instead as a historical and cultural record of the territory, a layer of memory in which uses, narratives, and ways of inhabiting place are inscribed. Writing—articulated through long lists of names—unfolds as a repetitive, bodily gesture, an act of walking with words that replaces physical movement with its graphic translation. Text emancipates itself from its semantic function to become texture, inscribing within the very material of the work the time and experience of the journey.
